Temperatures Going Wrong Direction

| January 4, 2015 @ 3:56 pm

This is one of those days when the actual high for the day occurred well before what is typically the warmest part of the afternoon thanks to the strong cold air advection which is underway across Central Alabama.

The temperature at the Birmingham Airport was at 63 degrees shortly after midnight and was down to 51 degrees just after 2 pm. Tuscaloosa was a 64 degrees just after midnight, but the temperature had fallen to 51 degrees at 8 am. A little sunshine actually saw the Tuscaloosa temperature go up a degree. Even in Anniston where the midnight temperature was 61 degrees, the temperature has been falling reaching a 2 pm value of 56 degrees.

Clouds will hang in for much of the afternoon and evening hours, but clearing should occur before sunrise on Monday. By then the mercury will be down into the 20s across Central Alabama.

More cold air coming into the Southeast US behind an Arctic front at midweek will bring the coldest air we’ve seen since January of 2014. The MOS guidance is for 10 degrees Thursday morning at the Birmingham Airport which means that some spots will see single digit values.
