THE BIG CHILL: As forecast, the day is very windy, and very cold across Alabama. Temperatures have fallen into the 20s over the northern third of the state, and the wind chill index has dropped to 11 at Scottsboro and Huntsville with north winds of 15 to 30 mph.

The wind chill index will drop as low as -10 across the Tennessee Valley later tonight, and as low as -5 at Birmingham and other places along the I-20/59 corridor.

A few light snow flurries across North/Central Alabama will end this evening, and they will have no impact.

TOMORROW MORNING: Not much change in our forecast. Lows between 10 and 15 for Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston, with single lows to the north.

lows

Birmingham’s record low for tomorrow (January 8) is 7 degrees set in 1942… we will be close, but the record will probably stand.

We stay below freezing all day tomorrow, but the wind will be light, and the sun will be out in full force. Then, another very significant freeze tomorrow night; the low by early Friday will be in the 16-20 degree range.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Our weather will be dry Friday and Saturday with a partly sunny sky both days and a high in the low 40s. A secondary push of colder air will drop the low down into the mid teens early Saturday as the weekend begins.

Clouds increase Sunday, but models continue to trend drier, and we will mention only a small risk of a shower late in the day, or Sunday night.

NEXT WEEK: A moist airmass will be over Alabama, and some light rain is possible at times Monday and Tuesday, but the better and more widespread rain should come Wednesday with the approach of a cold front. Colder and drier air will follow for Thursday and Friday, but not as cold as the air we are dealing with now. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.
