SINGLE DIGIT COLD: This Arctic airmass is over performing… temperatures are a little below forecast levels. These observations (taken around 6am) are from official NWS/FAA sites, and from the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team, who have accurate weather instruments. Remember, a phone app is not a thermometer (it uses extrapolated data), and car thermometers are not especially accurate as well.

THE DAY AHEAD: Most places in North/Central Alabama will stay below freezing all day, but at least the sun will be out in full force, and the wind will be much lighter. Tonight will be cold, but not as cold as last night. Most places will see a low between 17 and 21 degrees early tomorrow.

TOMORROW/SATURDAY: Birmingham (based on official data from the airport) went below freezing at 4:00 p.m. yesterday… we should climb above freezing around 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Meaning, we will be below freezing for 41 consecutive hours.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny, and north winds will increase as a secondary push of cold air moves in. We expect a high around the 40 degree mark.

Expect another hard freeze at daybreak Saturday. The GFS is now printing a low of 14 degrees for Birmingham, and it is very possible some of the colder spots across North Alabama could see single digit lows again. Saturday will be a mostly sunny day with a high in the low 40s.

SUNDAY INTO NEXT WEEK: Moisture levels rise, and a disturbed southwest flow aloft develops. A series of waves in that flow will bring some rain to the state; the first chance will come late Sunday and Sunday night, perhaps into early Monday morning. By then, temperatures will be well above freezing and there are no ice worries. A good chance we reach 50 degrees Sunday afternoon.

Some rain is possible Tuesday and Wednesday, but the rain won’t be continuous with some long dry periods. Temperatures rise into the upper 50s for the first half of the week. Cooler and drier air should arrive by Thursday and Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
