LONG SUB-FREEZING PERIOD: As I write this we are in the 24th consecutive hour of below freezing temperatures at Birmingham… we don’t expect to climb above 32 degrees until about 10:00 tomorrow morning, meaning a total period of 41 hours in a row with sub-freezing conditions.

Temperatures at mid-afternoon are generally in the 28-31 degree range after a bitterly cold morning. One of the coldest towns in Alabama this morning was Addison, in Winston County, with 2 degrees. It was 3 in Hamilton, 4 at Haleyville and Black Creek, and 5 and Cullman and Sand Rock.

We project a low tomorrow between 17 and 21 degrees for most North/Central Alabama communities, then we warm to near 40 degrees tomorrow afternoon with a partly sunny sky.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A new surge of colder air slips in here tomorrow night, and it looks like we will see a low early Saturday between 13 and 18 degrees; some of the traditionally colder spots across North Alabama might even visit the single digits again. Saturday will be dry with ample sunshine and a high between 38 and 41 degrees.

Clouds slowly increase Sunday, and some rain could reach our state late in the day and Sunday night as a southwest flow aloft sets up. Sunday’s high will be in the low 50s, not far from average values for January in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: Expect generally cloudy conditions Monday through Wednesday; while a little scattered light rain is possible Monday and Tuesday, the rain will be most widespread on Wednesday. Afternoon highs on these three days will be well up in the 50s, so no issues with ice.

The weather then looks cool and dry Thursday and Friday; highs in the 50s, and lows in the 30s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
