AT DAYBREAK: Temperatures are mostly in the 18-22 degree range early this morning as the new day dawns. Of of the coldest observations comes from Vic Bell up at Black Creek, northeast of Gadsden (in a bowl atop Lookout Mountain) with 13 degrees.

We should go above freezing around 9:00 in most places; ending a period with roughly 40 consecutive hours below freezing. The sky will be partly to mostly sunny today, and we will project a high close to 40 degrees, 12 degrees below the average high of 52 for January 9.

THE WEEKEND: A secondary surge of colder air moves in here tonight, and by daybreak tomorrow we expect to be in the mid teens; some of the colder pockets across North Alabama might even visit the single digits briefly. But, we warm into the low 40s tomorrow afternoon with a good supply of sunshine.

Clouds increase Sunday, and some rain could begin to fall Sunday afternoon as short wave energy approaches from the southwest. We will mention a chance of rain Sunday night into Monday as well. No ice problems, and no thunder with a cool, stable airmass in place.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be unsettled with clouds and rain at times through Thursday. Tuesday could be the driest day, with rain becoming more widespread Wednesday into Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Drier air finally returns by Thursday night and Friday. Afternoon highs through the week will be mostly in the 50s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
