The Chill Hangs On

The chill is hanging on but we are not quite as cold as we saw a few days ago. Still, morning lows approached single digit values, so it is cold! Even with the cold start to the day, I expect us to get above freezing by 11 am with a good supply of sunshine to help out.

Moisture returns Sunday with rain chances on the uptick Sunday evening and into Monday. Fortunately it appears that we will have warmed enough so that any moisture that falls will come in liquid form. We dry out a little on Tuesday, but the upper flow pattern remains unsettled keeping us in rain chances until the next major trough finally kicks things out of here late Wednesday and into early Thursday. Best rain chances will come Monday and again Wednesday but with the stream of minor impulses in the generally southwesterly flow we cannot rule out some passing light rain or showers on Tuesday. Rainfall should be fairly widespread on Monday and again Wednesday night into Thursday providing us with rainfall amounts for the two events of around an inch to an inch and a quarter.

The next major trough swings by on Thursday bringing drier but colder air back to the Southeast US. This system does not look as cold as what we just experienced, but it will be cold enough to keep us below our seasonal averages for this time in January.

Sunshine should return to Central Alabama on Friday with a fairly good warm up by Saturday.

A peek at voodoo country shows the pattern remaining active and cold as the long wave trough position keeps the toughiness over the eastern half of the country with a steady stream of short waves moving through the flow.

I’m still in southern California, so the next Weather Xtreme Video should be posted by late morning on Sunday. The two hour time difference is a real pain. I hope you have a great day. Godspeed.
