LOOKING FOR SOME SUN: Another gloomy morning across the great state of Alabama with low hanging clouds, fog, and some drizzle; temperatures are generally in the 34-40 degree range. We do note the NWS in Huntsville issued a “freezing rain advisory” for Madison and Jackson Counties very early this morning due to some drizzle with temperatures in the low 30s, but I have heard of no issues related to that involving travel; some light icing has been reported on some exposed objects across higher terrain, but the roads are just wet.

We also note some light snow/snow flurries are reporting this morning over the northwest corner of the state… places like Florence and Killen. No accumulation there, and no travel issues are expected.

Some of the high resolution models are hinting we might see a glimpse of the sun this afternoon, but any breaks in the overcast won’t last long thanks to a disturbance approaching from the west tonight.

WET AT TIMES TOMORROW: Models continue to trend wetter for tomorrow. No doubt the heaviest rain will fall over the southern half of the state, but we will mention periods of light rain for North/Central Alabama as well. It will be interesting to watch conditions at the onset of the precipitation; a touch of freezing rain, or maybe even a few snow flurries are not out of the question for North Alabama tomorrow morning, but for now it looks like just a cold rain for most communities. We will keep a close eye on trends over the next 24 hours.

Rain amounts tomorrow for the northern half of the state should be under 1/4 inch, and the rain will end from west to east during the afternoon. The high will be in the 40s.

BRIGHTER DAYS: The sun finally returns in full force Friday and Saturday as dry air and subsidence takes over; the high Friday will be in the mid 50s, with low 60s likely Saturday. A really nice day to start the weekend.

A sharp upper trough passing through will pull down some cooler air Sunday; the high will drop into the 50-55 degree range Sunday afternoon with a partly sunny sky and a cool north breeze.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks dry and seasonal Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. Some rain could arrive as early as Wednesday, but the higher rain chances will most likely come later, on Thursday or Friday (January 22-23). See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.
