MILD WINTER DAY: Temperatures, as expected, have reached the 60s across much of North and Central Alabama this afternoon; Tuscaloosa has actually hit 70 degrees at 3:00 p.m. There is some filtered sunshine, and no rain on the radar. We will maintain a small risk of a shower early tonight with a cold front passing through, but many communities won’t see a drop.

TOMORROW/SATURDAY: The weather will be noticeably cooler tomorrow with a high close to 50 degrees, but the sky will be bright and sunny. Saturday will be dry, with a partly sunny sky and a high in the mid 50s. Clouds begin to thicken late Saturday afternoon and Saturday night ahead of the next storm system in the southern branch of the jet stream.

RAIN RETURNS SUNDAY: We will forecast periods of rain statewide, and maybe even a thunderstorm or two as a surface low passes just to the north. The latest QPF numbers have come down a bit; totals of 1/2 inch are likely, with isolated amounts to one inch. Sunday’s high will be in the low 50s.

COLDER AIR MONDAY: A sharp change to colder weather is likely Monday following the rain; some places north of Birmingham won’t get out of the 30s with strong north wind, and we will maintain the chance of snow flurries Monday morning over the northern third of Alabama. The flurries should be a low or no impact event with surface temperatures above freezing, and the deeper moisture east of Alabama by then.

NEXT WEEK: Tuesday will be dry with a cold morning; lows will be in the 20-25 degree range. Then, clouds return Tuesday night, and more rain is likely Wednesday. Again we see evidence that a few snow flurries are possible as the rain ends late Wednesday night over North Alabama, but no significant impact is expected. Another shot of colder air arrives Thursday.
