The Warm Before the Cold

| February 14, 2015 @ 2:32 pm

Well, it’s supposed to be a take off on the calm before the storm. Today is turning out to be a gorgeous February day for Central Alabama with a crystal clear sky and temperatures topping out between 60 and 65 degrees. But don’t let this beautiful day fool you. A cold front was poised just to our northwest and will move into and across Central Alabama overnight tonight dropping temperatures back quite a bit. By sunrise on Sunday morning we should see most places in the lower 20s with some spots dipping all the way back into the teens.

This cold surge will set the stage for a chilly Sunday with highs reaching the upper 30s to lower 40s. Then the stage really changes as moisture pushes into North and Central Alabama from the west. At mid afternoon, winter weather watches had been issued for Sunday evening and Monday all the way from Central Alabama westward to Southeast Oklahoma. Unfortunately, a messy pattern is likely to produce a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the watch area which will likely result in significant travel problems from Birmingham to Memphis to Little Rock to Southeast Oklahoma. This winter storm will likely cause issues for Interstates 40, 55, 22, 30, and 65 to name a few. The icing situation is also likely to impact air travel since it will require de-icing of planes which can lead to delays.
