Winter Weather Advisory – Central Alabama

| February 20, 2015 @ 8:28 am

We stress over and over to “expect changes” in any winter weather forecast, and we have some this morning.

The NWS Birmingham has issued a winter weather advisory for parts of Central Alabama… new counties added are Autauga, Bibb, Chilton, Dallas, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lowndes, Marengo, Perry, Pickens, Shelby, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Etowah, and St. Clair. This includes Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston.

Wintry precipitation broke out this morning to the west, creating some unexpected freezing rain and ice issues for places like Jackson, MS. This precipitation is moving into Alabama this morning, and with sub-freezing temperatures the door is open for some impact this morning across Central Alabama (the forecast for North Alabama remains unchanged).

Snow/sleet/graupel should be light, but it will continue at times across Central Alabama this morning. Tuscaloosa reports 27 degrees, Birmingham 23 degrees at 8:00.

Temperatures

While no widespread travel impact is expected, some isolated issues/icy spots are possible this morning across West and Central Alabama. If the precipitation changes to freezing rain (rain that falls in liquid form with surface temperatures below 32), then impact will be much greater.

BOTTOM LINE: Light snow/sleet/graupel will continue across Central Alabama this morning; a few icy spots are possible, but widespread issues are not expected. However, if the precipitation changes to freezing rain, a much more significant travel impact is likely, and that is not out of the question.

NOTE: This advisory expires at 12:00 noon; temperatures in this part of Alabama should be above freezing by then.

The situation for North Alabama for later today and tonight remains the same… scroll down for the details on that.
