Warmer But Wet

We have gotten the wintry mix behind us, so we can look forward to some warmer temperatures for the weekend. Unfortunately we’ll also have to contend with some wet weather and we might even hear some thunder with the rain. A complex surface pattern with lows in the Great Lakes and the Ohio River Valley were creating a wintry mess for people from Missouri to New England and the Mid-Atlantic States. This same low, however, has turned our wind to the south allowing us to warm up and put an end to the wintry mix of precipitation we saw Friday. Clouds and off and on rain today will hold temperatures down a little but we should climb well into the 50s.

A front will push its way through the Southeast late Sunday and into Monday which will bring us another potentially icy situation as the cold air arrives again as precipitation comes to an end. There is enough instability later today and Sunday that we may hear thunder with some of the rain. It does not look likely that Central Alabama would have any severe weather. Right now, and the forecast may change, it appears our best threat for wintry precipitation will come late Sunday night and into Monday morning generally along and north of the Interstate 20 corridor. With moisture sticking around in the southern stream of the jet stream, we could see another shot of winter weather Monday night into Tuesday, but we’ll take them one at a time.

The weather settles down a little from mid-week to the end of the week with a slight upper ridge to keep us at and above the freezing mark. Unfortunately, another strong short wave trough is forecast to move through the Central Plains late Friday and into Saturday, so next weekend is likely to turn wet once again. For now, we should be warm enough to see the precipitation come only in the liquid variety.

Looking out into Week 2 or voodoo country, there appears to be no lack of cold weather as we enter March, however, the GFS is advertising a pattern shift around the 7th or 8th of March which would put the coldest air over the western US and warm up the eastern US. But you know how the patterns in voodoo country can change dramatically from one run to another, so we’ll sit back and watch the trends to see how things actually go.

I had a great time at Academy Sports in Trussville yesterday afternoon programming weather radios with my friend, Bruce Thomas from Midland Radio. I expect to have the next Weather Xtreme Video posted on Sunday morning by 8 am or so. Enjoy the warmer day and Godspeed.
