RADAR CHECK: The low levels are still relatively dry across North/Central Alabama this afternoon, and so far rain amounts have been pretty light and spotty…

Rain will increase tonight as a warm front approaches from the south.

TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY: Still looks very wet, but it won’t rain every minute of the day. We will forecast occasional showers, and possibly a thunderstorm both days; afternoon temperatures will rise into the low to mid 70s as warmer air pushes in from the south.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: A surface low forms over Louisiana, which should bring heavier rain to the state Thursday into Friday. The track of the surface low will determine if we have a risk of strong thunderstorms; for now it looks like the higher instability values will be over South Alabama… up this way the risk of severe storms seems rather low for now. If there is any concern, it might be over some flooding issues since average rain amounts of 3 to 5 inches are expected between now and Friday.

Keep in mind March is our wettest month of the year; Birmingham’s average rain for the month is 6.10″. So, having a long spell of wet weather like this is not very unusual this time of the year.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Rain chances will begin to decrease, and the amount of sun will begin to increase as we make a change back to a drier pattern. A few lingering showers are possible Saturday, but for now we don’t expect anything too heavy or widespread. Sunday looks relatively dry, with a mix of sun and clouds and only a small risk of a stray shower. Highs over the weekend will be in the 65 to 70 degree range.

Next week starts with dry weather and a good supply of sunshine Monday and Tuesday. See the blog and the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
