RADAR CHECK: Rain continues to fall over a decent part of North and Central Alabama at daybreak…

Periods of rain and a few thunderstorms will continue through tonight. Today will be warmer; temperatures should reach the 70s this afternoon, and accordingly the air will be more unstable. The guys at SPC have put up a “marginal” severe weather risk for parts of West Alabama this afternoon and tonight….

Surface dewpoints surge into the 60s, surface based CAPE values rise to near 1,000 j/kg, and 0-3 km helicity values are in the 100-200 m2/s2 range. The low level jet (850 mb winds) are around 30 knots… these parameters are not exactly overwhelming for severe weather in March, but they are certainly sufficient to warrant keeping a close eye on radar trends.

The high resolution HRRR model shows a band of storms moving through West Alabama after 2:00 p.m… approaching Birmingham by 6:00 p.m…

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: Not much change. A moist airmass stays in place with precipitable water values over 1.5″, and occasional showers and storms are likely; for now no severe storms are expected. It won’t rain every minute of these two days, but the rain could come at any hour of the day or night.

FRIDAY: A surface low is expected to be over Arkansas at midday, normally this could set some potential for strong to severe storms, but cooler air is expected to flow into the the state from the east, keeping instability values low (highs drop into the low to mid 60s). But, rain continues through the day with potential for a few thunderstorms.

Additional rain amounts of 3 to 5 inches are possible between now and Friday night, so we will need to watch for any potential flooding issues later in the week.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The weather slowly improves. Still, on Saturday, a few lingering showers are possible with a cloudy sky, but by Sunday the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny as dry air takes over, and the day should be rain-free. The high both days should be close to 70 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week looks rain-free with highs in the 60s… see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
