GETTING CLOSE TO 80: Birmingham’s official high yesterday was 77 degrees… we project a high between 77 and 80 today and tomorrow as our warm spring preview continues. We should mention here the first “official” day of spring (based on astronomy) is Friday; the vernal equinox comes at 5:45p CDT.

The air is dry, and today will be mostly sunny, followed by a partly sunny day tomorrow.

RAIN RETURNS: Cooler air slips into the state Wednesday as the high will drop back into the mid 60s, and clouds return during the day ahead of a wave approaching from the west. Rain begins Wednesday afternoon, and will be widespread Wednesday night into Thursday. The air will be stable, so no severe weather issues, and probably no thunder. Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch look likely.

FRIDAY: A lingering shower is possible, but a decent part of the day should be dry as the dynamic support lifts to the northeast. The sky will remain mostly cloudy, and the high Friday afternoon should be in the 61-64 degree range.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Another wave west of the state should be shunted down to the south; some light rain is possible over South Alabama Saturday afternoon and Saturday night, but for now it looks mostly rain-free for the northern half of the state. Saturday will feature more clouds than sun, but Sunday will be partly to mostly sunny. Highs over the weekend will be in the 60s.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks nice and quiet Monday through Wednesday with mostly sunny pleasant days and fair cool nights. The GFS is printing a low of 38 degrees for Birmingham early Monday.

CAUTION: It is WAY too early to plant anything that will be harmed by freezing temperatures. For Birmingham, the average date of the last freeze is March 26, but we have seen a freeze as late as April 23. I always recommend tax day (April 15) as a good time to plant. It is very hard to find a year with no late season freeze across North and Central Alabama.
