WARM MARCH AFTERNOON: Tuscaloosa and Montgomery have soared to 81 degrees at mid-afternoon… the Shelby County Airport was at 80, with upper 70s at Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden. Nothing but sunshine for most communities; a far cry from the cool, wet weather we dealt with last week.

Temperatures

Tomorrow will be another warm and dry day, with a partly sunny sky and a high around the 80 degree mark. The average high for March 17 is 67, and the record high for the date is 86 set in 1963.

COOLER TEMPERATURES AND RAIN RETURNING: Clouds will return Wednesday, and temperatures will be cooler with a high in the mid 60s. Rain should begin over West Alabama at some point Wednesday afternoon… that rain will be widespread Wednesday night statewide as short wave energy approaches. Periods of rain will continue Thursday; rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely by Thursday night. The air will be stable and there is no threat of severe weather, and probably no thunder.

FRIDAY: While a lingering shower is possible, especially Friday morning, I get the idea a decent part of the day will be dry, although clouds will linger. The high Friday afternoon will be in the mid 60s.

OUR WEEKEND: Saturday looks very nice, with a good supply of sunshine and a high around 70 degrees. Clouds return Saturday night and Sunday, but the best chance of rain with this feature will come over the southern half of the state. The GFS is printing a high of 67 for Birmingham Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks quiet early next week, with dry conditions Monday through Wednesday with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Some of the colder pockets could wind up in the 30s early Monday and Tuesday morning, but for now a widespread freeze is not expected. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
