Watch To Our West

| April 3, 2015 @ 6:12 pm

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for areas to our west.

A broken line of thunderstorms is pushing across Mississippi at this hour ahead of a cold front.

These storms will be severe as they push southeast across Mississippi.

Others across northeastern Mississippi and western Tennessee will become severe as they push into Northwest Alabama in a few hours. Look for a watch for parts of Alabama fairly soon.

There is still 50-55 knots of bulk shear over Northwest Alabama, which is sufficient wind shear for organized updrafts that can become supercells. CAPE values are running 1000-1500 joules, which is plenty instability for severe storms as well.

The good news is that surface to 1 km helicity is very low, meaning the tornado threat is very low as well. Can’t rule out an isolated tornado or two, but the main threat should be damaging winds.
