After a chilly start which saw temperatures drop to freezing in Northeast Alabama with some light frost, a good supply of sunshine will see temperatures climbs into the lower 70s for the afternoon highs. Clouds increase tonight and showers return for Monday as we head back to work after the Easter weekend.

The upper air pattern features a weak ridge for the Southeast US until the end of the week with a moist, southwesterly flow. Several weak disturbances will move through the flow keeping small rain chances in the forecast, but Wednesday and Thursday will be dry for most of us. Temperatures will once again climb into the lower 80s for highs.

A strong closed upper low will come out of the Central Rockies on Thursday and produce a surface low in the Central Plains states that will be the focus for a severe weather threat for that area. The surface low moves into the Great Lakes Friday and that will drag a cold front into Central Alabama. While we are still a good distance out, the front could be strong enough to produce strong to severe thunderstorms for the Southeast US. While the models are coming into better agreement this far out, there are still some questions about the weather situation so we’ll have to keep an eye on how future model runs play out this system. SPC has outlooked an area on Thursday in the Central Plains since confidence in that scenario is fairly good.

Looks like the front will move through Central Alabama early enough on Saturday to produce good weather for the weekend, but the next system is already taking shape over the Rockies by Sunday.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Sunny today with widely scattered showers possible Monday and Tuesday. Highs will be in the 70s. Wednesday and Thursday look great with highs near 80. Friday showers return. Sea water temperatures are in the mid to upper 60s.

Looking out into voodoo, the overall pattern remains active with another potent system coming around April 15th.
