Rain Develops Later Today

| April 28, 2015 @ 6:24 am

RADAR CHECK: Nothing showing up on radar at daybreak; the weather is dry and cool across the great state of Alabama. Vic Bell, the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher at Black Creek, just northeast of Gadsden, reports a chilly 38 degrees just before 6:00. Cullman is at 40… Fort Payne is at 41.

The upper low that has been over Texas the last few days will begin to fill and lift out today, and we expect rain to develop over the northern half of the state at some point this afternoon. Then, periods of rain will continue tonight into tomorrow morning. Seems like the most widespread rain will come from about 6:00 this evening through 12:00 noon tomorrow; rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch seem likely for our part of the state. The air will be cool and stable; I doubt if we hear any thunder.

TO THE SOUTH: SPC has dropped the standard “slight” risk of severe weather for far South Alabama today and tonight… they now just define a “marginal” risk for the Gulf Coast.

Drier air returns Thursday as the system pulls away from Alabama, with a partly sunny sky and a high close to 70 degrees.

FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY: The weather could not be better, with sunny days, fair nights, and a slow warming trend. We expect low 70s Friday, mid 70s Saturday, and a high Sunday close to 80 degrees. Perfect weather for race weekend at Talladega, spring sports, or just about anything else you enjoy outdoors.

The dry weather will likely continue into early next week; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details. We see nothing now in modeling to suggest any severe weather threat for North/Central Alabama for the next ten days.

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY: A total of 18 tornadoes touched down across Central Alabama; EF-2 tornadoes hit Bessemer and Graysville… an EF-1 moved through Kimberly. Over 40 people were injured, thankfully there were no fatalities.
