Only Isolated Showers Later Today

| April 30, 2015 @ 6:26 am

CHILLY LATE APRIL MORNING: Seeing some low 40s up in Northeast Alabama early this morning… 41 at Black Creek, and 43 at Fort Payne. Not many more of these kind of mornings before the long, hot summer sets in. The sky is mostly clear.

A cold core upper trough is still over Alabama, so we will continue to mention a few isolated showers this afternoon, but the HRRR shows very little activity, and with dry air in the low levels I would suggest the chance of any one spot getting wet is only in the 10 percent bracket. Otherwise, today will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a stiff north breeze averaging 10-20 mph, gusting at times to 25 mph or higher. The high will be in the mid 70s this afternoon.

TOMORROW: Pretty much a case of severe clear. We start the day in the 44-49 degree range, followed by a high in the low 70s. The humidity will be low, and visibility will be excellent.

THE WEEKEND: Sunny days, fair nights, and a warming trend. We reach the mid 70s Saturday, and Sunday’s high will be around 80 degrees. You could not ask for better weather for the races at Talladega, spring sports, or anything else you want to do this weekend.

NEXT WEEK: An upper ridge holds, meaning generally warm and dry weather for the great state of Alabama. Partly sunny days, fair nights, and a high each day in the low 80s, maybe mid 80s in spots. Active weather will be to the west across the Great Plains.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Sunny days, fair nights through much of next week from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. Highs will be mostly in the 70s along the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 70 degrees. Hurricane season, by the way, begins in a month, on June 1.

WET APRIL: Looks like Birmingham will wind up with 10.43″ of rain this month… about three and a half inches shy of the record for April, 13.75″ recorded in 1979. Birmingham’s rain surplus for the year is up to 4.33″.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
