Warm, Dry May Weather Continues

| May 4, 2015 @ 6:24 am

SUMMER PREVIEW: We are expecting the warmest weather so far this year over the next seven days, thanks to an upper ridge overhead. Today will feature a good supply of sunshine with a high in the low 80s.

For the rest of the week, the weather won’t change much. The ridge will keep the rain producing systems well to the west, and around here we are forecasting mostly sunny, warm days, and clear nights through Friday. Highs will stay in the 80s… we could see a few upper 80s later in the week. The average high for May 4 (for Birmingham) is 78.

EARLY SEASON TROPICAL SYSTEM? The global models have been advertising for days a surface low off in the Atlantic, off the Southeast U.S. coast this week. The GFS continues this idea; if something forms there, it will not be a classic warm core tropical system, but a “sub-tropical” storm with the name of “Ana”. The GFS moves this feature to a point near Savannah late this week, and some rain is possible for the eastern part of Georgia and the Carolinas, but this should not impact Alabama in any way.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Really don’t see much change, as the warm, dry pattern continues. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s Saturday and Sunday with a pretty decent amount of sunshine both days. We might consider a small risk of a shower Sunday as moisture levels begin to increase, but for now we will leave the forecast dry.

Seems like the next chance of showers for our state will come one week from today (Monday May 11) with a cold front, but it doesn’t look like a big rain event, and doesn’t pose a risk of severe weather. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Just a slight risk of a shower late today along the coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores, otherwise, mostly sunny days and fair nights through the weekend. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 70s, with 80s inland. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 73 degrees.
