Warm May Days

| May 4, 2015 @ 3:34 pm

AT MID-AFTERNOON: Temperatures are mostly in the low 80s this afternoon, about 3-5 degrees above average for early May in Alabama. No rain on radar, and the sky is mostly sunny.

Temperatures

REST OF THE WEEK: An upper ridge will keep Alabama warm and dry through at least Friday, with mostly sunny days and fair nights. We project highs in the 83 to 86 degree range, with early morning lows between 57 and 62. Makes for a simple forecast, and a nice preview of summer.

TO THE EAST: Models continue to show a sub-tropical storm forming off the south Atlantic coast of the U.S. by Wednesday. The NAM suggests this low will be close to Charleston, SC Thursday afternoon; it will bring a good bit of wind and rain to the coast of the Carolinas, but all of this will remain well to the east of Alabama.

If the system does become a sub-tropical storm, the name will be “Ana”.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Not much change as the upper ridge holds. Partly to mostly sunny Saturday and Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 80s; it should be the warmest weekend so far this year. We might consider a small risk of a shower or storm Sunday afternoon as moisture levels begin to rise, but most of the state will remain rain-free.

A chance of showers will return early next week on Monday (May 11) as an upper trough approaches. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Everything looks great this week on the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores; we expect mostly sunny days and fair nights through the weekend. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the mid to upper 70s, with 80s inland. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 76 degrees.
