Temperatures Remain Above Average

A PREVIEW OF SUMMER: The overall weather pattern won’t change much around here through Friday with unseasonably warm temperatures continuing thanks to an upper ridge overhead. We will be in the mid 80s today and tomorrow, with upper 80s likely by Friday afternoon.

We do note the high resolution HRRR model shows a few, tiny, isolated showers across Central Alabama this afternoon, but we won’t mention anything in the forecast for now with the low levels remaining relatively dry.

TO THE EAST: A sub-tropical storm is expected to form off the South Atlantic coast of the U.S. over the next 48 hours; most models move it to a point near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina by Friday evening. Then, it just hangs around for a few days with no real steering currents. This will get the name “Ana” if it develops, and the main impact will be showery, breezy conditions on the coasts of the Carolinas… no problems for Alabama at all. A hurricane hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the area this afternoon.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A number of communities in our state will see 90 degree heat for the first time this year Saturday and Sunday. Seeing a high of 90 is not that unusual for mid-May; the earlier 90 degree temperature on record at Birmingham came on April 17, 1955 when the high was 90. The weekend will remain mostly dry, although a few isolated showers or storms could show up across the Tennessee Valley of far North Alabama Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will bring the chance of showers on Tuesday, but there is little upper support, and rain amounts will most likely be light. A drier and slightly cooler airmass drops in here Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect mostly sunny days and clear nights on the coast through the weekend from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 70s, with 80s likely inland. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 74 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
