Scattered Showers Later Today

| May 20, 2015 @ 6:22 am

HUMID AIR STILL IN PLACE: A surface front remains north of Alabama, and as it drifts southward we expect scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. After a very wet April, with rain amounts in excess of 10 inches, Birmingham has picked up only 0.32″ for the first 19 days of May, so it is getting pretty dusty around here…. a little rain would not be a bad thing.

It won’t rain everywhere, but a few spots could see a good downpour. In fact, SPC has a “marginal” severe weather risk into the western half of Alabama, so a few strong storms are possible as well. Otherwise, expect a mix of sun and clouds today with a high in the mid 80s.

REFRESHING CHANGE TOMORROW: Models continue to trend cooler, and we have dropped the forecast high into the 70s with lower humidity and a nice north breeze along with a good supply of sunshine. Temperatures will drop down into the mid 50s by daybreak Friday, and some of the cooler pockets could see upper 40s. Then, during the day Friday, the sky will stay sunny with a high between 77 and 80. Delightful weather for late May in Alabama.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Saturday looks warm and dry with a high in the mid 80s; then with a slow increase in moisture levels we will bring back the risk of a few widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms Sunday and Monday, but nothing widespread or especially heavy. Highs remain in the mid 80s those two days.

SEC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: A passing shower or storm is possible at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium this afternoon and tonight, otherwise dry weather tomorrow through Saturday. A brief afternoon shower or storm is possible Sunday, but they will be scattered in nature and there is a good chance the weather stays dry for the championship game.

AT THE BEACH: About 8 to 10 hours of sunshine each day on the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the holiday weekend with just a few widely scattered showers or storms around. Highs on the immediate coast will remain in the low 80s, and the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 81 degrees.
