Cool Change

| May 21, 2015 @ 6:23 am

REFRESHING AIRMASS ARRIVES TODAY: A surface front has pushed into deep South Alabama this morning, and cooler, drier continental air will settle in. We project a high today only in the low 70s with a good supply of sunshine and low humidity levels. And, by daybreak tomorrow, cooler spots will see a low down in the 40s, well below average for late May in Alabama. The sky will stay sunny tomorrow with a high in the mid to upper 70s. Doesn’t get much better.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Afternoons turn warmer with highs back in the 80s, and we stay rain-free Saturday and Sunday with a good supply of sunshine both days. With rising moisture levels, we will mention the risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” Monday with a mix of sun and clouds; the high will be in the mid 80s.

A typical early summer pattern will continue through the week, with partly sunny days and the risk of a brief afternoon shower or storm on a daily basis. Highs next week will be in the 80s, at seasonal levels.

SEC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: No rain through Sunday; sunny days and fair nights at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Highs in the 70s today and tomorrow, then back in the 80s Saturday and Sunday.

BEACH FORECAST: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine today with a few scattered thunderstorms this afternoon; some of those could be strong. Then, mostly sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through Sunday with only a slight risk of a shower each day. Next week looks very routine for late May with about 7 to 9 hours of sun each day along with the risk of widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs on the immediate coast will be mostly in the low 80s, the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 81 degrees.
