Scattered Afternoon Storms

| June 11, 2015 @ 6:15 am

JUST LIKE JUNE SHOULD BE: The overall weather pattern won’t change much across the great state of Alabama today and tomorrow; expect partly sunny, humid days with the risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”… the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in three. A weak upper low over the region will aid in the development of afternoon storms, and like recent days, where they form they will pack a punch. The high today and tomorrow will be in the mid to upper 80s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: An upper ridge will begin to slowly build across the region… meaning hotter afternoons and fewer afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet both days will drop into the 10-20 percent category, and the high will be close to 90 degrees.

HEATING UP NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge will bring highs in the low to mid 90s much of next week, and the warm air aloft associated with the ridge will keep most communities dry; any afternoon showers or thunderstorms will be very isolated. It will be the hottest week so far this year; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: All remains quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

AT THE BEACH: About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day along the coast through Saturday, with the usual risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Expect increasing amounts of sun and fewer storms by Sunday and much of next week. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the mid 80s, with 87 to 90 degree highs inland. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning is 81 degrees.
