Hottest Weather So Far This Weekend

| July 16, 2015 @ 6:30 am

HEAT LEVELS RISING: The upper ridge, that has been centered west of Alabama in recent days, is beginning to strengthen and expand, and that will mean fewer afternoon storms and hotter afternoons as we approach the weekend. We project a high today in the mid 90s, followed by upper 90s tomorrow, and readings near 100 degrees over the weekend. We should note that Tuscaloosa did reach 100 yesterday afternoon.

Understand that a few storms could very well form during the heat of the day, but they will be few and far between, and many communities will be dry. Days will be mostly sunny and hazy, nights mostly fair, and the chance of any one spot getting an afternoon storm will be in the 10-20 percent range.

Today will be the 10th consecutive day with a high of 90 or higher (for Birmingham and most North/Central Alabama observation points). The hottest temperature this summer so far is 97 degrees, measured on June 22 and June 23.

The next 30 days are typically the hottest part of the summer in Alabama… our average high begins to fall slightly after August 15.

NEXT WEEK: The ridge weakens a bit by mid-week, so heat levels should fall a bit by Tuesday and Wednesday with a better risk of afternoon thunderstorms by then. But, the ridge expands again toward the end of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, fair nights through most of next week with the risk of an occasional passing storm from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores. Highs on the immediate coast will stay between 87 and 90, with mid 90s inland. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 84 degrees.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the next seven days.
