A Few Storms Over West Alabama

| July 16, 2015 @ 3:31 pm

RADAR CHECK: Overall, it is a pretty quiet afternoon across Alabama, but a few scattered storms are over the western counties of the state with frequent lightning, moving south.

These storms will dissipate this evening, and most of North Alabama will be dry overnight.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The 5940 meter 500 millibar ridge centered west of the state will expand into Alabama, meaning rising heat levels. Mid to upper 90s are likely tomorrow, and for Saturday and Sunday we project highs in the 97-100 degree range. This will be the hottest weather so far this summer. As always in late July, afternoon thunderstorms are a decent possibility, but they will be random, and very widely scattered. The chance of any one spot getting wet each afternoon will be in the 10-20 percent range. Mostly sunny, hot hazy days, and mostly fair nights.

NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge should weaken slightly, meaning heat levels backing off a bit by mid-week with a slightly higher coverage of afternoon showers and storms. Still, typical hot, humid mid-summer weather will be the story. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Expect mostly sunny days, fair nights, and just an occasional passing storm from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through next week. Highs on the immediate coast will remain in the upper 80s, with mid 90s likely just a few miles inland. Sea water temperatures are generally in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet; over in the eastern Pacific Hurricane Delores is off the west coast of Mexico; it will gain latitude in coming days and weaken over open water, no threat to land. However, some of the moisture from Delores will move up into the Southwest U.S. this weekend bringing showers and storms to cities like Phoenix.
