Hot, Muggy Summer Weekend Ahead

| July 17, 2015 @ 6:16 am

HOT IS THE WORD: We are entering the hottest part of summer, climatologically speaking, from now through mid-August. And, sure enough, we expect the hottest weather so far this year through the weekend.

The upper ridge centered west of the state will strengthen a bit and expand eastward, setting up a hot, hazy, humid stretch of weather for Alabama with partly to mostly sunny days, fair nights, and only isolated afternoon thunderstorms. The chance of any one spot getting wet through the weekend is about one in five, with the best risk of a storm between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. Afternoon highs between 96 and 100. Good ole dog day weather.

NEXT WEEK: There will be small variations in the strength and placement of the upper ridge, and temperatures aloft, but generally speaking things just won’t change much. Highs might back off a few degrees by mid-week, with a slight increase in the coverage of afternoon storms, but the idea remains the same. Highs in the 90s, lows in the 70s. Just what you expect in late July in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Mostly sunny days, fair nights on the Gulf Coast through next week, with of course, the chance of an occasional passing thunderstorm just for fun and your viewing pleasure. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with mid 90s inland. Sea water temperatures remain mostly in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: A wave is in the far eastern Atlantic, but it is not expected to develop due to dry air and unfavorable upper air winds on the journey westward.
