Hottest Weekend So Far

| July 17, 2015 @ 3:32 pm

RADAR CHECK: A large part of Alabama is dry this afternoon with temperatures generally in the mid 90s. But, a few isolated storms have formed across the central counties… moving slowly to the south…

These storms won’t last long, and they all fade from the radar after the sun goes down.

HOT SUMMER WEEKEND: We project highs in the 96-99 degree range tomorrow and Sunday, with mostly sunny, hazy days and fair nights. Like today, a few “pop-up” storms are possible, but they will be widely scattered. Chance of any one spot getting wet both afternoons will be in the 20 percent range.

NEXT WEEK: The synoptic pattern won’t change much; highs hold in the 90s, lows in the 70s. Partly sunny days, fair nights, and the risk of a few widely scattered thunderstorms each afternoon. Small variations in the strength of the ridge will bring changes in the placement and coverage of afternoon storms each day, but trying to identify those far in advance is just about impossible. Bottom line is that we will have very typical late July weather. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine daily on the Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores through next week, with the usual risk of a passing storm from time to time just to spice things up. The image below was captured at Gulf Shores this afternoon from @chadchad71

Highs on the immediate coast will hold in the upper 80s, with mid 90s just a few miles inland. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: A weak tropical wave in the Central Atlantic is moving west with little chance of development due to dry air and harsh upper air winds. Tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through next week.
