Scattered To Numerous Showers/Storms

| July 22, 2015 @ 5:37 am

UNSETTLED THROUGH FRIDAY: The heat ridge across the Deep South is weaker today, and accordingly the air aloft is colder, and the atmosphere more unstable. That should open the door for a higher coverage of scattered showers and storms each day, along with lower heat levels.

The best chance of showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but in this pattern we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower. And, some of the storms could be strong; the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has much of North and Central Alabama under a “marginal” severe weather risk today and tonight.

The main risk will come from strong, gusty winds, but all summer storms bring lots of lightning along with heavy rain.

Afternoon highs will be at or just over 90 in most places, although a few communities could hold in the 80s all day where showers form early.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The upper ridge begins to rebuild, so we expect rising heat levels, and fewer scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. Highs go back in the mid 90s with a pretty decent amount of sun both days.

Not much change into early next week… see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine daily along the coast from Gulf Shores east to Panama City Beach, with a passing storm from time to time. Highs on the immediate coast will hold in the upper 80s, with mid 90s just a few miles inland. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 86 degrees.

TROPICS: No tropical storm formation is expected in the Atlantic basin through the rest of the week, although we do note the GFS suggests a tropical system could form just off the South Atlantic coast of the U.S. over the weekend, or early next week. If this happens, it will move northeast, and will have no impact on Alabama or the Central Gulf Coast. See the video for more details on this.
