Strong Storms Moving Across Alabama

| July 22, 2015 @ 3:24 pm

RADAR CHECK: Scattered, strong thunderstorms are moving eastward across Alabama; the heavier storms are capable of producing a wet microburst (a small area of straight line winds high enough to knock down trees and power lines).

SPC maintains a “marginal” risk of severe storms for much of Alabama through tonight, and tomorrow as well. The primary threat will come from strong straight line winds, but of course, all summer storms have gobs of lightning and heavy rain.

Temperatures today are mostly in the upper 80s and low 90s, but where storms have formed those communities are only in the 70s because of the rain cooled air.

TOMORROW: Interesting to note that both the NAM and GFS models keep Birmingham in the 80s all day; the sky will be cloudy at times, and again we project scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms. While most of them will come during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t rule out a morning shower. Highs will be in the 88-91 degree range for most places.

FRIDAY: The upper ridge begins to rebuild; the sky will be partly sunny, and thunderstorms will be scattered, and mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. Chance of any one spot getting a storm Friday afternoon will be about one in three.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: With a stronger ridge, we expect a good supply of summer sunshine both Saturday and Sunday, with only widely scattered afternoon storms. Highs will rise up into the mid 90s.

And, pretty typical mid-summer weather is expected next week. Hot, humid, a few scattered afternoon storms. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine daily through the weekend from Gulf Shores west to Panama City Beach, and of course, you will deal with an occasional passing storm. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with mid 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here. TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet. Global models continue to hint at some develop off the U.S. South Atlantic coast by Sunday or Monday, but if that happens, it won’t have any impact on Alabama.
