RADAR CHECK: We have patchy light rain across Alabama as the day begins; the sky is mostly cloudy with temperatures in the 70s.

The air will be rather unstable today, and we expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms by afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center maintains a “marginal” severe weather risk for much of the state… like yesterday the primary threat with the stronger storm will be microburst potential (local areas of strong winds, enough in come cases to knock down trees and power lines).

Birmingham has recorded a high of 90 degrees or higher for the past 16 consecutive days; some places could hold in the 80s all day today due to clouds and showers.

TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge begins to rebuild, and the air becomes more stable. Still, scattered, mostly afternoon storms are possible tomorrow with a high from 91 to 94. Then, by Saturday and Sunday, we expect a good supply of summer sunshine both days with highs up in the mid 90s. Understand we always have the risk of a thunderstorm on a summer afternoon in Alabama, but they should be pretty widely spaced over the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: Pretty typical mid-summer weather is likely… partly sunny days, fair nights, and the risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Highs will be in the 90s, and lows in the 70s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Not much change; about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine daily along the coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through the weekend with the standard chance of a passing thunderstorm from time to time. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with mid 90s inland. Sea water temperatures remain mostly in the mid 80s. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here. The Gulf Coast Beach Forecast is presented by Gulf Shores Plantation by Mandoki Hospitality Vacation Rentals. Escape to Gulf Shores Plantation where memories last a lifetime.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through Saturday.
