Dry Air Takes Over Tonight

| August 11, 2015 @ 3:27 pm

RADAR CHECK: As expected, the most widespread and heavier storms across Alabama this afternoon are over the southern half of the state, but a few stray, isolated showers are over Northeast Alabama…

The isolated North Alabama showers will end very soon, and tonight will be mostly clear as the dry air takes over.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: No doubt these two days will be very comfortable for mid-August. No, you won’t need jackets or sweaters, but the humidity will be lower, and nights will be cooler. We project highs between 88 and 91 degrees, and the coolest morning will come early Thursday when mid 60s are likely at daybreak. Some of the cooler pockets across North Alabama will drop down to near 60 degrees. A nice touch of fall.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Moisture levels begin to rise Friday, and a few widely scattered afternoon storms are possible. Then, for the weekend, we expect partly sunny days Saturday and Sunday with the risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. The chance of any one spot getting wet over the weekend will be about one in three, with most of the storms coming from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Afternoon highs will be very close to 90 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: We will roll with a persistence forecast… not much change for at least the first half of the week with highs in the low 90s, and the risk of an afternoon storm in spots each day. Very routine weather for August in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is entering a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Forecasters expect meteor rates to peak at 100+ per hour late tomorrow night and early Thursday morning when our planet passes through the heart of the debris stream. Perseids produce more fireballs than any other meteor shower of the year, so stay tuned for a good show and keep an eye on the sky, especially from midnight to 5:00 a.m.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine daily through the weekend from Gulf Shores west to Panama City Beach, with a passing thunderstorm from time to time. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low to mid 90s inland. Sea water temperatures are in the low to mid 80s. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here. The Gulf Coast Beach Forecast is presented by Gulf Shores Plantation by Mandoki Hospitality Vacation Rentals. Escape to Gulf Shores Plantation where memories last a lifetime.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.
