Showers Few And Far Between

| September 22, 2015 @ 3:36 pm

RADAR CHECK: As expected, we have a few widely scattered showers on radar this afternoon south and east of Birmingham… they are moving slowly to the southwest…

These showers will fade away soon after sunset, and the sky will be mostly fair late tonight.

TOMORROW: The chance of a shower is so small I think we can leave it out of the forecast. The sky will be partly sunny with a high up in the mid 80s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: A moist easterly flow will mean some risk of scattered showers on these two days; highest coverage will come over the eastern counties of Alabama. We project mid 80s Thursday, and a high closer to 80 Friday afternoon with a mix of sun and clouds.

THE WEEKEND: Not much change; we will maintain the chance of scattered showers Saturday and Sunday; chance of any one spot getting wet both days will be in the 30 percent category. Otherwise, we will have intervals of sunshine with highs close to 80 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: No overall change; showers will remain rather widely scattered for at least the first half of the week with a partly sunny sky each day; highs in the low 80s.

TROPICAL MISCHIEF NEXT WEEK? The GFS (American global model), ECMWF (European model), and the GEM (Canadian model) all develop a tropical low in the Gulf of Mexico early in the week. The GFS/ECMWF ultimately move it southward into the Bay of Campeche in 8-10 days, with no impact on the Central Gulf Coast. However, the GEM moves it up toward the mouth of the Mississippi River toward the end of next week. I would suggest the chance of tropical development over the Gulf is fairly high since the pattern favors it, but nobody knows if it will become a significant system, or the ultimate track. We will keep an eye on it; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama will host ULM (University of Louisiana at Monroe) Saturday at 3:00 at Bryant Denny Stadium; there will be cloudy periods during the game, and a passing shower is not out of the question. Temperatures will fall from near 81 degrees at kickoff, into the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. Mississippi State will visit Auburn at Jordan Hare Stadium Saturday evening (6:30 kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with one or two light showers possible during the game. Temperature at kickoff near 75 degrees, falling to near 70 by the final whistle.

TROPICS: A broad low is off the coast of the Carolinas; this is expected to drift slowly to the southwest in coming days, and will bring breezy and wet weather to parts of the Carolinas and Georgia later this week.

Some of the moisture from this system could creep into Alabama from the east over the weekend.

And, Tropical Storm Ida in the Central Atlantic will meander around for the next five days far from land.

AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through the weekend with a few scattered showers and storms around each day. Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperature this afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 78 degrees.
