Alabama 811 | Know What's Below.

Higher Rain Chances Begin Tomorrow

| September 24, 2015 @ 6:30 am

ANOTHER WARM DAY: We project a high in the mid 80s across North/Central Alabama today… a little above the average high of 82 for September 24 (for Birmingham). The sky will be partly sunny, and showers this afternoon will be widely spaced, with the higher risk over the eastern counties of the state.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Deeper moisture moves into the state from the east tonight, and tomorrow promises to be a cloudy day with a few periods of rain. And, it will be noticeably cooler with highs only in the mid 70s due to the clouds and showers.

Not much change over the weekend; expect more clouds than sun Saturday and Sunday with showers around both days. The rain won’t be especially heavy or widespread, but no doubt it will rain at times. Highs over the weekend will be in the 77 to 81 degree range.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Only a few isolated showers around for the high school games tonight, but tomorrow night’s games will be played under a cloudy sky with a higher threat of showers. I don’t expect any lightning delays, however. Temperatures will be in the 70s both nights.

Alabama will host ULM (University of Louisiana at Monroe) Saturday at 3:00 at Bryant Denny Stadium; the sky will be mostly cloudy during the game, and a few showers are likely. Temperatures will fall from near 80 degrees at kickoff, into the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. Mississippi State will visit Auburn at Jordan Hare Stadium Saturday evening (6:30 kickoff)… the sky will be cloudy with one or two showers likely. Temperature at kickoff near 75 degrees, falling to near 70 by the final whistle.

NEXT WEEK: Moist air lingers, and scattered showers will remain possible Monday. The chance of rain could increase significantly Tuesday and Wednesday as the GFS hints a tropical low could move up into the region from the Gulf of Mexico. But, the ECMWF (European model) shows little development, and a good bit of uncertainty remains. It is simply too early to know if this become a significant system, or the ultimate destination. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine on the Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through the weekend with a few scattered showers and storm around. Highs in the 80s; the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 78 degrees.
