Cooler, Periods Of Rain Today

| September 25, 2015 @ 6:33 am

RADAR CHECK: Rain is falling across parts of Alabama this morning; heaviest is over the northeast part of the state, thanks to an upper air low near the Georgia border.

Expect a mostly cloudy sky today with a few periods of rain likely; the most widespread rain will come over North and East Alabama. We won’t get out of the 70s today due to the clouds and showers, and some places near the Georgia border could hold in the 60s all day.

THE WEEKEND: A decent pool of moisture will linger, and we will mention the chance of a few passing showers tomorrow and Sunday. The rain won’t too widespread or heavy, and I don’t expect much thunder. The high both days will be pretty close to 80 degrees.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Some rain is possible for the high school games tonight, but I don’t think lightning will be an issue for most stadiums. Temperatures will be in the 70s with a cloudy sky. Best chance of rain tonight will be over East Alabama.

Alabama will host ULM (University of Louisiana at Monroe) tomorrow at 3:00 at Bryant Denny Stadium; the sky will be mostly cloudy during the game, and a few showers are possible. Temperatures will fall from near 80 degrees at kickoff, into the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. Mississippi State will visit Auburn at Jordan Hare Stadium tomorrow evening (6:30 kickoff)… the sky will be cloudy with the risk of one or two passing showers. Temperature at kickoff near 75 degrees, falling to near 70 by the final whistle.

NEXT WEEK: Confidence is high some type of tropical low will move northward out of the Gulf of Mexico, but no way of resolving details since the various global models are all over the road with the placement of the system. We will forecast a higher rain coverage Monday afternoon through Tuesday, followed by a trend toward drier weather Wednesday. It is doubtful this becomes a tropical storm, but remember open tropical waves can bring some big rain amounts. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 4 to 6 hours of sunshine today through Sunday on the coast from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rain coverage will go much higher Monday into Tuesday, with potential for heavy rain as the tropical low moves inland. As noted above, forecast confidence in the specific details, and placement of the heaviest rain axis, remains low for now.
