Cloudy/Cool; Some Light Rain

| October 2, 2015 @ 3:29 pm

THIS AFTERNOON: Clouds cover most of Alabama this afternoon, but for now there isn’t much on radar.

Temperatures are generally in the 60s, although places like Cullman and Haleyville are only in the upper 50s at mid-afternoon. We should be in the upper 70s in early October.

A deep upper low over South Alabama will keep the sky mostly cloudy through tomorrow, and we will maintain the chance of some light rain at times. The most widespread rain will be over the eastern half of the state, and even there it won’t rain all day tomorrow. The high tomorrow afternoon will be in the mid to upper 60s for most communities.

SUNDAY/MONDAY: We should begin to see some decent intervals of sunshine Sunday, but with cold air aloft we will still mention the risk of scattered showers over East Alabama. Monday should be mostly dry, with only isolated showers over the eastern and northern counties. We reach the low 70s Sunday, and upper 70s Monday.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: Looking warmer and dry, with mostly sunny days and fair nights Tuesday through Friday. Highs rising up into the low 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight’s high school games, it will be cloudy and cool with a chance of some light rain. Best chance of rain will be at stadiums along and east of I-65, and temperatures will be in the low 60s.

Auburn hosts San Jose State tomorrow at Jordan Hare Stadium (3:00p CT kickoff)… the sky will be cloudy with some light rain possible at times. Expect a kickoff temperature near 64 degrees, falling to near 60 by the fourth quarter. Alabama will take on Georgia at Athens Saturday (2:30p CT kickoff); rain is likely with temperatures in the low 60s. No lightning delays are expected, but the rain could be heavy at times. Take the rain gear… there is a flash flood watch in effect for Athens and East Georgia.

JOAQUIN: The hurricane is packing sustained winds of 130 mph, and is now beginning to move away from the Bahamas. It will remain well east of the U.S. in coming days.

EASTERN U.S. FLOOD THREAT: A serious flood threat is ahead for the region from East Georgia to Virginia; heaviest rain is expected across South Carolina. This is not directly related to Joaquin, although a fetch of moisture from the hurricane is aimed for South Carolina tomorrow…
