Warmer Afternoons; Dry Through Saturday

| October 21, 2015 @ 6:15 am

LONG DRY SPELL CONTINUES: The last measurable rain in Birmingham was back during the pre-dawn hours October 10, so today will be the 11th consecutive day with dry conditions. With a sunny sky we project a high in the upper 70s today.

The trend toward warmer afternoons will continue, with low 80s tomorrow, and low to mid 80s Friday afternoon. It isn’t unusual to see 80s in October in Alabama; in fact we have recorded 94 degrees twice during the month; on October 5, 1927, and on October 6, 1954. The air stays dry, and there no risk of rain through Friday.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday will be another warm, dry day with a high at or just over 80 degrees along with a partly sunny sky. Clouds increase Sunday with an upper trough to the west, but global models continue to trend drier for Alabama. We will mention just the chance of a shower Sunday afternoon, but it sure looks like a decent part of the day will be dry, and the best chance of showers will be near the Mississippi border. The high Sunday afternoon will be in the 77 to 80 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: There will be some risk of a few showers during the first half of the week, but again models have trended drier, suggesting that any rain will be pretty light and spotty. Cooler air invades later in the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

RACE WEEKEND AT TALLADEGA: Dry weather is the story at the Talladega Superspeedway this week and into Saturday with mostly sunny, warm days and fair, cool nights. Forecast uncertainty remains for Sunday, but it sure looks like the higher risk of showers will be over the western half of the state. There is a chance they get the CampingWorld.com 500 in without any rain, but that is no promise. For now we will just mention an outside risk of a passing shower. Highs over the weekend at Talladega will fall between 76 and 80 degrees.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama will host Tennessee at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa Saturday (2:30p CT kickoff… the weather will be partly sunny and warm with temperatures falling from around 82 at kickoff, into the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. No significant chance of rain.

Auburn is on the road; they travel to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks at 11:00a CT Saturday. The sky will be mostly cloudy, with rain and thunderstorms likely during the game. Temperatures will hover in the 67-70 degree range. Take the rain gear; it could be a soaker.

AT THE BEACH: Sunny days, fair nights on the coast from Panama City Beach west to Gulf Shores through Saturday; a few showers could show up Sunday. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here. The Gulf Coast Beach Forecast is presented by Gulf Shores Plantation by Mandoki Hospitality Vacation Rentals. Escape to Gulf Shores Plantation where memories last a lifetime.
