Light Rain Lingers As The New Day Dawns

| October 28, 2015 @ 6:31 am

STILL SOGGY: Low clouds cover Alabama this morning, and light rain continues to fall in many places at daybreak…

The rain will taper off by mid to late morning, but the clouds will most likely linger throughout the day. I guess a few breaks in the overcast are possible in a few spots later, but hope in seeing some sun today is fading.

Temperatures have been slowly rising during the night, and we should reach the low to mid 70s this afternoon.

COLD FRONT TONIGHT: An approaching surface cold front will bring the risk of showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm, to the northern half of the state late tonight and very early tomorrow. Seems like the main window for this comes between midnight and 6:00 a.m…. many of you will sleep through it.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Any lingering showers will end very early tomorrow, and the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny during the day with a high in the mid 70s. Friday promises to be a beautiful day, with ample sunshine, low humidity, a morning low in the 40s, and an afternoon high close to 70. The fall colors will look great against the cobalt blue sky.

RAIN RETURNS OVER THE WEEKEND: Clouds move in quickly during the day Saturday, and the next weather system will push rain and thunderstorms into Alabama Saturday night and Sunday. The GFS has trended a little faster in recent runs, suggesting the rain begins in the 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. time frame Saturday, meaning it might be a real challenge to get in any trick or treating with dry conditions.

A surface low will be positioned northwest of Alabama, and surface based CAPE values are expected to rise to 1,200 j/kg during the day Sunday. This means strong storms will be possible, but lapse rates are marginal, and wind fields not overwhelming. We will watch for trends in coming days as the event gets closer, but for the moment the severe weather risk doesn’t look especially high. This should bring some good rain to the state, with amounts of 1-2 inches likely.

NEXT WEEK: Drier air returns Monday with clearing, and a decent part of the week looks dry and mild, with highs in the 70s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For Saturday’s Magic City Classic in Birmingham… the sky will be mostly cloudy when Alabama State and Alabama A&M kickoff at Legion Field (2:30p CT), temperatures will fall from the mid 70s at kickoff into the low 70s by the fourth quarter. I can’t rule out some rain reaching the stadium late in the game; it could be wet on your way back to the parking lot. Widespread rain is likely in Birmingham Saturday night.

Auburn hosts Ole Miss Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 11:00; at this point the weather looks mostly cloudy, but the chance of rain holds off until Saturday night, well after the game is finished. Temperatures will rise from the upper 60s at kickoff into the low to mid 70s by the fourth quarter.

Alabama takes the weekend off.

AT THE BEACH: A small risk of a shower today from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores, otherwise partly sunny this afternoon. Then, mostly sunny weather is the story tomorrow and Friday with highs in the 70s. Rain returns Sunday… See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here.
