Winds Pick Up Tonight; Very Wet Tomorrow

| November 17, 2015 @ 3:19 pm

ACTIVE WEATHER JUST WEST OF ALABAMA: Across our state this afternoon, weather conditions are mild and breezy with some sun at times; temperatures are up in the low to mid 70s. Nothing on radar here, but to the west, a tornado watch covers parts of West Mississippi through 8:00 p.m.

WINDS KICK UP TONIGHT: A tight pressure gradient will bring strong south winds to North/Central Alabama tonight and early tomorrow; winds will average 15-25 mph, gusting at times to 35 mph. Maybe over 40 mph on ridges. This kind of wind might even bring down a few trees and power lines.

BIG WET DOWN TOMORROW: The big batch of rain and storms to the west will begin to move into Alabama early tomorrow morning between 4:00 and 6:00 a.m. The storms could be strong as they creep in here from Mississippi, but with no surface based instability, there is little, if any severe weather risk over the northern half of our state.

However, there is a risk of severe storms over the southern quarter of Alabama tomorrow; generally south of a line from Thomasville to Greenville to Eufaula.

The main threat will come from strong gusty thunderstorm winds over far South Alabama.

Most of the state will receive around 2 inches of rain tomorrow; no widespread flash flooding is expected, although a few localized issues are possible. Temperatures will slowly fall through the 60s during the day, and the rain will end from west to east tomorrow night.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These two days will be dry and pleasant with a good supply of sunshine and afternoon highs in the 60s. Early morning lows will be in the 40s; these temperatures are right at seasonal average for mid November in Alabama.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A dry cold front will pass through Saturday, otherwise the day will be partly sunny with a high close to 60 degrees; north winds will increase to 10-20 mph during the day. Sunday morning will be cold; the 12Z GFS is now printing a low of 29 degrees for Birmingham. The day will be sunny but very cool with a high around 50 degrees.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: The first half of the week will be dry and cool, but the latest global model data hints rain could return to the state by Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, and possibly into Black Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

Auburn will host Idaho at Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday (also kicking off at 3:00 CT)… a fair sky with 60 degrees at kickoff, and temperatures close to 50 degrees by the end of the game.
