Wet Today; Cooler Tomorrow

| December 1, 2015 @ 5:54 am

RADAR CHECK: Rain is more widespread across North and Central Alabama early this morning; the cold front that was just north of Birmingham actually moved northward through the night, and all of the state is in moist air.

We will forecast periods of rain through tonight; heaviest rain will come over Northeast Alabama, where an “areal flood watch” is in effect for Marshall, DeKalb, Jackson, and Madison Counties. Over two inches of rain are possible there, otherwise rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely. No severe weather, and probably not much thunder. Temperatures will hold in the 60s all day.

The rain will taper off tonight from west to east.

TOMORROW: Expect lingering clouds, and maybe a bit of light rain and drizzle early in the day…. then gradual clearing is very possible by afternoon as drier air works into the state. The day will also be noticeably cooler with a high back in the 50s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These two days will be cool and dry, with sunny days and fair nights. Highs will be in the 50s, and lows in the 30s. Colder pockets will see a light freeze both mornings; most places will be in the mid 30s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Dry weather continues; expect a good supply of sunshine Saturday and Sunday with a high around 60 degrees. The latest model data hints early morning lows will remain in the chilly 30s.

NEXT WEEK: An upper trough will approach Monday, but models are trending drier with very little moisture in place. We will hang on to a small risk of a shower Monday, but the week looks generally quiet with dry conditions and seasonal temperatures. No sign of any severe weather issues or major weather events here through mid-December. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: If you are headed to the SEC Championship game Saturday in Atlanta, the weather will be delightful, with a sunny sky and a high around 60 degrees. Nice weather inside the dome and outside as well this year.
