Near Record Warmth This Weekend

| December 11, 2015 @ 3:11 pm

SPRING-LIKE WEATHER: We are projecting a high in the 72-75 degree range tomorrow and Sunday… not quite at record levels, but very close. Here are the record highs for Birmingham…

December 12 78 (1971)
December 13 79 (1931)

Tomorrow and Sunday will feature a mix of sun and clouds; conditions become breezy Sunday with a south wind averaging 10-20 mph by afternoon.

TO THE WEST: Severe storms are possible tomorrow over parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas as a dynamic weather system moves out of the western states.

SUNDAY NIGHT IN ALABAMA: After a close review of the morning model data, it still looks like the overall severe weather risk for Alabama is low. Not zero, but low. SPC does not any part of Alabama in a severe weather risk in their “Day Three” outlook…

The prime limiting factor is the lack of surface based instability…

The air aloft for this kind of system is also relatively warm, which means poor lapse rates, another ingredient needed for severe weather. It will be very hard to get thunderstorms going in this setup. So, the bottom line is that a band of showers will move through the state Sunday night, with gusty winds, but probably no thunder. Best chance of rain will come from 8:00 p.m. Sunday through 4:00 a.m. Monday… rain amounts of 1/2 inch are likely… some spots could see a little more.

But, these showers will be moving through with strong wind fields and a highly sheared environment, so we will still watch things closely. When it comes to thunderstorms, expect the unexpected, you know…

MONDAY: The rain will end by mid-morning, and the sky will begin to clear by afternoon. It will be cooler with a high around 60 degrees.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: A wave aloft will bring some risk of showers Wednesday night or Thursday, but it doesn’t look like a big rain event due to the lack of moisture. Noticeably colder air follows by Friday, when the high will drop to around 50 degrees. A decent chance we have a freeze early Saturday morning, December 19. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

CHRISTMAS WEATHER: Looks like temperatures around here will be close to average values; highs in the mid to upper 50s around December 25. Coldest weather in the nation will be out west.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Jacksonville State will host Charleston Southern tonight (7:00p CT kickoff) at Burgess Snow Field in the FCS quarterfinals; the sky will be mostly cloudy with temperatures falling from 65 at kickoff, to near 60 degrees by the final whistle. Very comfortable for December.

AT THE BEACH: Dry weather continues along the coast from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores tomorrow and Sunday, but a line of storms will arrive Sunday night. See the complete Gulf Coast 7 Day Planner here. The Gulf Coast Beach Forecast is presented by Gulf Shores Plantation by Mandoki Hospitality Vacation Rentals. Escape to Gulf Shores Plantation where memories last a lifetime.
