Rain Tomorrow; Much Colder Sunday

| January 8, 2016 @ 6:21 am

MILD, MOSTLY DRY TODAY: We are well above freezing this morning, with most communities in the upper 40s and low 50s at daybreak. Expect a high in the low 60s today with mostly cloudy sky; most communities will be dry, although a touch of drizzle is possible in spots.

WET START TO THE WEEKEND: A deepening surface low will be near Memphis tomorrow, and will spread rain into the state during the day. It won’t rain all day, but rain is likely at times, and a few thunderstorms are possible. In fact, SPC has a “marginal” risk of severe weather defined for Northwest Alabama, and along the Gulf Coast…

A few low topped storms are possible tomorrow, with potential for some small hail and gusty winds, but the overall severe weather threat is low with very limited instability values. Most places will see a high back in the low 60s tomorrow afternoon.

FRIGID AIR BLOWS IN SUNDAY: Sunday looks like a cold and raw day with lingering clouds, a gusty north wind of 10-20 mph, and a little drizzle in spots. In fact, snow flurries are possible over far North Alabama Sunday in the colder air, but no impact from them. Temperatures will fall into the 30s during the day, and the north wind will make it feel colder. Places like Huntsville, Athens, and Scottsboro could drop below freezing by afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: The weather looks generally cold and dry. A secondary surge of cold air arrives Wednesday; looks like the coldest mornings will come early Monday and Thursday, with lows between 18 and 23. Many North Alabama communities won’t get out of the 30s Wednesday when that second surge of cold air arrives.
Moisture levels will rise late in the week, and global models suggest a rather robust storm system could impact the state the following weekend (January 16-17) with rain, and another shot of colder air. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tomorrow, Jacksonville State plays North Dakota State for the FCS National Championship tomorrow in Frisco, Texas (north of Dallas; 11:00a CT kickoff). Expect a mix of sun and clouds; no significant risk of rain. Temperatures will rise from 42 degrees at kickoff, to near 46 by the final whistle.

The FBS National Championship game, Alabama vs Clemson, is Monday at Glendale, Arizona (7:30p CT kickoff). Despite a good bit of rain for Phoenix this week, the weather looks cool and dry for the game with temperatures falling from the mid 50s at kickoff, into the upper 40s by the second half. The stadium has a roof, but it will be pretty chilly walking to and from your transportation.
