Rain/Storms Tomorrow; Much Colder Sunday

| January 8, 2016 @ 3:28 pm

THIS AFTERNOON: The sky is generally cloudy across Alabama this afternoon, although we do have a few breaks in the overcast. No rain on radar, and temperatures are generally in the 50s.

TOMORROW: We will deal with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms as the weekend begins. High resolution model data suggests a good chance of rain from about 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and perhaps one more band of showers and storms late in the day after 4 p.m. SPC maintains a “marginal” risk of severe storms for parts of North and West Alabama, and on the Gulf Coast…

It is a typical January “low CAPE, high shear” type event. There will be some low topped cells during the day that could very well try to rotate thanks to strong low level helicity values. The overall threat is not very high, but still we will need to keep a close eye on radar for potential for a small spin-up tornado somewhere. We should reach the low 60s tomorrow afternoon.

COLD AIR RETURNS SUNDAY: It won’t be a “Chamber of Commerce” kind of day; Sunday will be windy and cold with a gusty north wind, lingering clouds, some drizzle, and temperatures falling through the 30s during the day. A few snow flurries are possible in the cold air over the northern third of Alabama, but no impact is expected. Communities near the Tennessee border could hold in the upper 20s all day.

NEXT WEEK: Cold and dry weather is the story Monday through Thursday; a secondary surge of cold air arrives Tuesday night. Coldest mornings will be Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday with temperatures in the 18-22 degree range. It should be the coldest week so far this season. Temperatures moderate late in the week, and some light rain is possible Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tomorrow, Jacksonville State plays North Dakota State for the FCS National Championship tomorrow in Frisco, Texas (north of Dallas; 11:00a CT kickoff). Expect a mix of sun and clouds; no significant risk of rain. Temperatures will rise from 42 degrees at kickoff, to near 46 by the final whistle.

The FBS National Championship game, Alabama vs Clemson, is Monday at Glendale, Arizona (7:30p CT kickoff). Despite a good bit of rain for Phoenix this week, the weather looks cool and dry for the game with temperatures falling from the mid 50s at kickoff, into the upper 40s by the second half. The stadium has a roof, but it will be pretty chilly walking to and from your transportation.
