Slightly Cooler Tomorrow; Rain By Friday

| January 12, 2016 @ 3:05 pm

FINE WINTER DAY: Feels pretty good this afternoon; a strong January sun has pushed temperatures up into the 50s across the great state of Alabama. But, tonight a dry cold front will pass through, and tomorrow will be a bit cooler; most locations will see a high between 47 and 50 degrees. The air stays dry, and the sky will remain mostly sunny tomorrow.

Thursday looks like the warmest day of the week; temperatures will be close to 60 degrees by mid-afternoon with a partly sunny sky.

WET WEATHER RETURNS FRIDAY: A surface low is expected to move across Alabama during the day Friday, we will forecast periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm; rain amounts around 1/2 inch are likely and the high will be in the 50s. No risk of severe storms.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Colder air will drop into the state; highs should be in the 40s Saturday and Sunday. We do note the 12Z run of the GFS model shows a low passing through the northern Gulf, with rain for South Alabama, and snow for North Alabama Saturday night into very early Sunday morning. However, the reliable European model (the ECMWF) is bone dry, showing the low suppressed deeper into the Gulf, and the Canadian global model is dry as well. So, we will reject the GFS solution as an outlier, and go with a dry, chilly weekend forecast. Clouds will linger a decent part of the day Saturday, but Sunday will be partly sunny.

NEXT WEEK: For now the first half of the week looks cold and dry; highs generally in the 40s, and lows in the 20s. We warm up later in the week, and a decent chance of rain and thunderstorms will return around Friday January 22. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
