Rain Moves In Late Tonight

| January 14, 2016 @ 3:07 pm

PLEASANT AFTERNOON: Temperatures have reached the low 60s across North/Central Alabama this afternoon, with sunshine through a high cirrus cloud layer. Clouds will thicken in coming hours, and rain should move in after midnight as a surface low passes south of here.

Looks like the main window for rain will come from about 3:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m…. with just a touch of lingering light rain tomorrow afternoon. No severe weather threat, and thunder should be confined to South Alabama. Rain amounts should be 1/2 inch or less. Temperatures rise into the mid to upper 50s tomorrow afternoon.

THE WEEKEND: Saturday looks dry, but mostly cloudy with a high in the low to mid 50s. The sun might peek out at times. A wave will pass well to the south, in the Gulf of Mexico Saturday night, and it might bring a few sprinkles or flurries to the northern half of Alabama, but the air will be very dry, and nothing significant is expected. Best chance of seeing some light rain Saturday night will be over far South Alabama, especially near the Gulf Coast.

Then, during the day Sunday, expect a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the upper 40s.

COLD AIR BLAST EARLY NEXT WEEK: A pretty good surge of cold, Arctic air blows in here Sunday night, and it looks like most North Alabama communities won’t get out of the 30s Monday and Tuesday, despite a good supply of sunshine both days. The coldest morning will come early Tuesday… we are forecasting a low between 18 and 22 degrees.

The weather warms up later in the week, with rain becoming likely by late Thursday and Thursday night. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

JANUARY HURRICANE: Hurricane Alex formed this morning over in the far eastern Atlantic; the first hurricane in the Atlantic basin since Alice in 1955, and the first hurricane to form during the month of January since 1938.
