The rain will taper off later this morning, with only a few lingering, spotty showers this afternoon. No sun today, and the high will be in the mid to upper 50s this afternoon.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Tomorrow will feature a mostly cloudy sky, although a few intervals of sunshine are possible. The high tomorrow afternoon will be in the 52-55 degree range, right at seasonal averages for mid-January in Alabama.

Tomorrow night, a surface low develops down in the Gulf in response to another bit of energy aloft passing through in the southern branch of the jet stream, and this will bring the chance of rain to the Gulf Coast. Up our way, the air will be relatively dry, and we don’t expect anything more than sprinkles or flurries with no impact.

The day Sunday will be dry and a little colder with a mix of sun and clouds; the high will be in the upper 40s at most places.

NEXT WEEK: A pretty good shot of Arctic air drops into the state Sunday night; Monday will be cold and dry with a partly to mostly sunny sky. Communities north of Birmingham won’t make it out of the 30s, and some places near the Tennessee border could stay below freezing much of the day.

The coldest morning will come early Tuesday when the low will be in the 18-22 degree range. And, temperatures will stay pretty cold during the day Tuesday with a high in the low 40s.

The rest of the week will feature a warming trend… clouds increase Wednesday with a chance of light rain. Rain will be more widespread Thursday and Thursday night thanks to a surface low moving across the region, followed by drier air Friday. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

No sign of any winter storms for Alabama through the next ten days.

ALEX: Our rare January hurricane is still moving northward through the eastern Atlantic with sustained winds of 75 mph; it will become post-tropical later today.
