The Space View of Snow

| January 24, 2016 @ 11:02 am

With clear skies covering most of the eastern half of the country, it gives us a great view of the snow cover across the large area of the US impacted by the storm on Friday and early Saturday. Here is the Southeast US view annotated with some arrows pointing to the snow cover. Even the northeast corner of Alabama saw enough snow for it to show up on the satellite view this morning.

Further northeast the snow cover is easy to see from Kentucky and Tennessee all the way to Massachusetts. Clouds do interview with the view in northwest Pennsylvania and the western half of New York state. The snow covered areas are fairly easy to distinguish from the clouds since those covered by snow have a somewhat “veiny” look while clouds are smoother and more uniform. The National Snow Analysis web site reports the snow cover across the continental US stands at 57 percent this morning.

It’s times like this that I’m happy to have had a career in the fascinating world of weather. I still find it hard to believe that this summer will mark my 50th year since my very first job for the US Weather Bureau in 1966.
