Rain/Storms Return Over The Weekend

ONE MORE NICE DAY: Another cold start to this day for North Alabama… Vic Bell, our Skywatcher up at Black Creek in Etowah County near Gadsden, reports 33 degrees at 5:30 this morning with more frost. Haleyville, Cullman, and Fort Payne are also down in the 30s. This just seems to be the winter that won’t go away.

We will warm nicely today with a good supply of sunshine; most communities will reach the mid 70s today.

Clouds invade tonight, and a few showers could creep into far North Alabama as we get set for an unsettled weekend of weather.

RAIN AT TIMES OVER THE WEEKEND: Take a few minutes to watch the Weather Xtreme video… lots of maps and graphics that will help you plan outdoor events.

Bottom line is that we will be wet at times both days, but the weekend won’t be a total washout.

TOMORROW: The GFS and the NAM models are suggesting the most widespread rain during the day tomorrow will come over far North Alabama… the Tennessee Valley, and up into the state of Tennessee. Showers are possible elsewhere at any time, but they should be pretty widely spaced, and for places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden we should get away with some decent rain-free periods. The sky will be cloudy and the high will be in the mid to upper 70s.

Rain and storms will become more widespread late in the day and tomorrow night. We note that the NAM suggests surface based CAPE values (instability) will rise to over 2,000 j/kg, so certainly a strong storm is possible, but the wind fields are not especially strong, and bulk shear values are relatively low for late April. So, for now organized severe weather is not expected. We do note SPC has the standard “slight risk” of severe weather in place tomorrow west of Alabama for much of North Mississippi, so we will watch radar trends closely.

SUNDAY: Occasional showers and a few thunderstorms are likely as a surface cold front approaches from the west. It won’t rain all day, but it could rain at any time during the day. Severe storms are not expected with marginal instability and wind fields. Like Saturday, the sky will be generally cloudy with a high up in the mid to upper 70s.

NEXT WEEK: The moist air sticks around, so showers are still possible Monday through Wednesday. But, on these three days there isn’t much in the way of dynamics, so showers should be fairly scattered, and the sun could be out at times. The weather will be warm with highs around 80 degrees.

Later in the week, a deep, full latitude upper trough will form over the eastern third of the nation Thursday. This pushes a cold front the state Thursday with a band of showers and storms… for now there seems to be little risk of severe weather.

Then, unusually cool air for May blows into Alabama on Friday. We might have a hard time getting out of the 50s Friday afternoon with a very chilly north wind, and we might make a run at record lows around here early Saturday morning, May 4…. the GFS hints at temperatures 25-30 degrees below average. The weather for that weekend (May 4-5) should be dry and cool.

Again, see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

Sunny Saturday Ahead

| 3:16 pm April 12, 2013

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today… way too much “catching up” to do after yesterday’s severe weather event**

NWS STORM SURVEY: We first note the NWS Birmingham has identified an EF-2 tornado near Notasulga in Macon County from last night’s storms. More survey results will follow from other Alabama counties.

TONS O’ SUN: As expected, the sky is sunny across Alabama this afternoon; temperatures are generally in the 60s with a refreshing north breeze. Tonight will be clear and cool; most places will see a low between 42 and 46 degrees early tomorrow.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Great weather tomorrow with a sunny sky along with a high in the mid 70s. But, enjoy it while you can since the weather changes Sunday.

New model data suggests clouds return Sunday, with a pretty decent chance of rain by Sunday afternoon. Below is the 12Z high resolution (4km) NAM valid at 1:00 p.m. CT Sunday afternoon…

There is even come hint at thunderstorms over East Alabama. We will certainly be hitting the rain harder in the forecast for Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be warm and unsettled during the first half of the week; highs will be in the low 80s Monday through Wednesday, and with a moist airmass in place we will have the chance of scattered showers or storms each day, primarily during the afternoon and evening hours, during the peak of the daytime heating process.

Storms will be greater in number, and stronger Thursday when a cold front pushes in the state; we will need to monitor that for signs of severe weather in coming days. Below is the 12Z GFS output valid at 1pm Thursday (April 18)

VOODOO LAND: Hints of a late season cold snap later this month… below is the 500 mb flow from the GFS on Saturday April 20…

Odds of frost that late in April are always very small, but just something to keep an eye on.

Big Warm-Up For The Weekend

| 5:58 am March 14, 2013

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

FRIGID MARCH MORNING: Here are some pre-dawn temperatures reported from our Skywatchers and the official observation stations across Alabama…

Black Creek (just northeast of Gadsden) 24
Cullman 26
Fayette 26
Haleyville 27
Russellville 27
Center Point 29
Lake View (Tuscaloosa County) 29
Birmingham 30
Trussville 32

We warm into the mid to upper 50s today with sunny sky. Won’t be as windy as yesterday.

VERY MILD WEEKEND: Looks like we will enjoy highs in the 73-77 degree range tomorrow through Sunday; it will be the warmest weekend so far in 2013. The sky will be mostly sunny tomorrow and Saturday; some clouds will show up Sunday, but some sun should still get through at times. Showers on Sunday should stay north of here, closer to a surface boundary over Tennessee.

STRONG STORMS MONDAY? The GFS is printing a high of 78 degrees for Birmingham Monday, and the air becomes unstable with surface based CAPE values rising to levels over 500 j/kg by afternoon. This is more than sufficient for strong storms this time of the year, but thankfully the main dynamic support with the next system will remain pretty far north of here, and the big shear values remain up north as well. Still, a strong storm or two is certainly possible Monday evening into Monday night along the front, so we will watch parameters closely in coming days. Rain amounts of about 1/2 inch look likely.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be dry and slightly cooler with highs back into the 60-65 degree range. Then, the weather looks unsettled Thursday through Saturday (March 21-23) with moist air returning and a front just to the north. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

AT THE BEACH: Look for sunny days and fair nights through Sunday. Highs will be in the 60s today and tomorrow, and close to 70 over the weekend. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a very cool 56 degrees; that will limit the ability of the air to warm much along the immediate coast. Next week, at first glance it looks like showers are possible Monday night, followed by mostly dry weather for the mid-week period.

NEED SOME HELP WITH YOUR WEATHER RADIO? We will be at the Publix in Oxford this afternoon from 3:30 until 6:30… if you need your weather radio programmed… have questions, or need to buy a new one, then come see us.

Dry Through The Weekend

| 5:20 am March 12, 2013

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

BLUE SKY AND SUNSHINE: We begin this day with temperatures in the 30s, and we will warm to near 60 this afternoon with sunshine in full supply.

Tomorrow will be sunny, but breezy and cooler with a gusty northwest wind averaging 12-22 mph, gusting to 30 mph at times as the pressure gradient becomes tighter. The high will drop into the mid 50s, and the wind will make it feel cooler.

THURSDAY MORNING FREEZE: We are projecting a low early Thursday in the 27-32 degree range. Way, way too early to think about planting anything that will be harmed by frost or a freeze. To really be safe, I always suggest waiting until April 15 since an early April cold snap is just about a given around here.

We warm to near 60 Thursday afternoon as we enjoy another sunny day.

DELIGHTFUL WEEKEND: The warming trend will continue into the weekend. Friday’s high will be around 70, with low to mid 70s Saturday and Sunday. A few scattered clouds will show up over the weekend, but a good supply of sunshine will get through. Sure looks great, and it should be the warmest weekend so far in 2013.

NEXT RAIN: The 00Z GFS is a little faster with the next rain producer; it shows a chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Monday of next week, but no severe weather threat for now.

VOODOO LAND: The 00Z GFS is somewhat more aggressive with rain events later this month, showing good rains here around March 25 and March 27. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY: The great Blizzard of 1993 started… see the blog for memories, pictures, and details.

Dry Through The Weekend

| 5:44 am March 6, 2013

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

BLUSTERY MARCH DAY: Windy and chilly weather is the story for Alabama today. I don’t think we can get out of the 40s, and a brisk north wind of 15-30 mph will make it feel colder. A good chance the clouds linger today over the northeast counties of the state, but for most of Alabama the sky will be partly to mostly sunny as dry air takes over.

We drop below freezing early tomorrow; most places will see a low in the upper 20s.

REST OF THE WEEK: A warming trend kicks in tomorrow afternoon as we rise into the upper 50s. That trend continues through the weekend; we reach the mid 60s Friday, upper 60s Saturday, and low 70s Sunday. The sky will be sunny each day, although scattered clouds will begin to show up Sunday along with a gusty south wind ahead of a storm system west of Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS and the ECMWF are in good agreement; showers and storms will return to our state Monday. For now the GFS shows no surface based instability over North Alabama, and with a positive tilt upper trough the risk of severe weather looks low. Drier air returns for the middle of next week with seasonal temperatures; highs in the 60s and lows in the 30s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details, maps, and graphics.

NEED HELP WITH YOUR WEATHER RADIO? We will be at Academy Sports in Tuscaloosa tomorrow evening from 3:30 until 6:30… if you need a weather radio programmed, have questions, or need to buy a weather radio, come and see us. Remember, we are now in the spring tornado season and every Alabama home, business, and church needs one.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham’s rain total for the year is 14.83?; the surplus for the year is 4.60?. Tuscaloosa is drier; they have a deficiency of 0.44? since January 1. Anniston has a surplus of 3.71?.
