Large Tornado on the Ground…near Greenville MS
The situation is growing worse over northern Louisiana into western and central Mississippi tonight.
From the NWS Jackson…
10 miles NW of Greenville Airpor [Bolivar Co, MS] emergency mngr reports TORNADO at 07:42 PM CDT — emergency management spotters report large tornado on the ground.
And an update…
* AT 752 PM CDT…TRAINED WEATHER SPOTTERS REPORTED A TORNADO NEAR BENOIT…OR 14 MILES WEST OF SHAW…MOVING NORTHEAST AT 31 MPH
The environment over the Delta region of western Mississippi is becoming more favorable for tornado development. Big storms are developing over northern Louisiana. A new tornado watch has been issued until 2 a.m.
What does this mean for Central Alabama?
It is wait and see time. The airmass over Central Alabama is certainly more stable. But as the cold front moves eastward overnight, the activity in western Mississippi will shift eastward. It should enter western sections of Alabama during the predawn hours. Hopefully it will be weakening and there won”t be any severe weather. But only time will tell.
The storms should reach the Birmingham area after 3 a.m. They will likely produce gusty winds, heavu rain and a lot of lightning. But they should be below severe limits, but I would not be surprised to see watches and warnings through the night.
Then, if there is a period between the first round of storms the final round ahead of the cold front, we could see the airmass destabilize to the point that we deal with more severe weather during the afternoon, especially over eastern sections of the state. We will continue to refine this forecast as we go through the evening hours.
We will be monitoring the situation and updating you trhoughout the night…
